Congratulations to Junior trumpet player Kyle Vanover for receiving a contract with The Raiders Drum and Bugle Corps. Kyle auditioned in Southern New Jersey earlier this moth and was offered a position in this elite marching ensemble. Way to go, Kyle! And more congratulations go to six of Washington High School's Patriot musicians for auditioning for and being placed into the 2022 West Virginia All-State Band!

Students at T.A. Lowery Elementary School are being dismissed early today, Monday, Dec. 20, 2021. The early dismissal is the result of a power outage that officials with Potomac Edison say may continue through 2:00 PM. Buses will pick students up for a 12:30 PM dismissal. Students will receive lunch before being dismissed. Anyone needing to contact the school can use the emergency number (304) 676-0338. A student at Jefferson High School sustained an injury this morning that required emergency medical attention. Students and staff were sheltering in place to give the ambulance and EMS room to access the student and transport them to the hospital. The partnership with emergency responders is critical for maintaining student safety. We appreciate their support, the quick action of staff and administrators, and the patience of our students and families.

Jefferson County Schools has been made aware of threats on the social media platform Tik Tok. Following our protocol, we immediately notified our partners in law enforcement, who began an investigation. We appreciate their quick response and work to keep our students and staff safe. Jefferson County Schools congratulates Washington High School's Anna Walter, one of two West Virginia students recently selected to represent the state as part of the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP). Ms. Walter will join Senator Joe Manchin III and Senator Shelley Moore Capito as state student delegates during the 60th annual USSYP Washington Week Online, to be held March 6 - 9, 2022.

Thank you to the entire Child Nutrition staff at Jefferson County Schools! Our cooks, cafeteria managers, and secretaries have continued to provide tasty, nutritious meals to students during unprecedented circumstances brought on by a global pandemic. Despite staffing shortages and supply chain issues, they served students more than 155,000 meals in October alone. They have not only continued to build good habits in our elementary school students with balanced meals for breakfast and lunch, but are also reducing food waste and helping middle and high school students make good choices by allowing them to make individual decisions on which menu items they choose, including the salad bar.
Jefferson High School has a lot to celebrate with its band programs. Director of Bands for JHS, JP Lynch announced that six students achieved state recognition this year. Nathanson Gageby (Trumpet), Taylor Sutherland (Trumpet), Ellen Kemp (Trumpet), and Nick Krywcun (Trombone) were all named to the WV All-State Band. Bethany Piercy (Trumpet) and Britt Shoedel (Trombone, 1st Chair) have been named to the WV All-State! Lynch said he is very proud of his students.
“Being named a WV All-State musician is the highest honor that an individual student musician can attain.”

Dear JCS Staff,
Thank you for your continued hard work to ensure that our children are safe, fed, and educated. The circumstances students, educators, and families face this school year are challenging in many ways. We hear you, and we understand that any opportunity to put our philosophy of "family first" into practice is important. That is why we are pleased to clarify that we will have our full five snow days this year, thanks to the additional time accrued through the hard work of staff and students. After that, we have five days of non-traditional instruction before days need to be made up elsewhere in the calendar.
Unfortunately, recent news stories indicated something else. The reporters and news outlets were not at fault. Dr. Gibson-Learn apologizes for any confusion as a result of her miscommunication. Thank you for allowing us the space to explain.
