CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Jefferson County Schools is excited to announce that C.W. Shipley Elementary School has been named a 2022 National Blue Ribbon School. The U.S. Department of Education selects National Blue Ribbon Schools based on overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. C.W. Shipley Principal Dr. Brooks Kursey says it is a great day for the entire school.

“This recognition is an acknowledgment of our collaborative dedication and hard work to provide exemplary learning environments and engaging instructional programs. Our goal every day is to make certain our students feel safe, supported, and reach their full academic potential,” he said.

Dr. Kursey emphasized the collaborative community between students, teachers, and families that contributes to student success.

Jefferson County Schools Deputy Superintendent for Instruction Dave Banks echoed that sentiment.

“We are so excited for the students and staff at C.W. Shipley. We have very high expectations, and this recognition is a great way to honor their achievement. Everyone in the community and district has supported this success and should be incredibly proud.”

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona announced the award recipients during his Road to Success Back to School bus tour.

“I applaud all the honorees for the 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award for creating vibrant, welcoming, and affirming school communities where students can learn, grow, reach their potential, and achieve their dreams," he said.

Secretary Cardona said Blue Ribbon Schools go above and beyond to keep students healthy and safe while meeting their academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs. They serve as models of effective school practices for state and district educators and other schools nationwide.

The U.S. Department of Education recognizes National Blue Ribbon Schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores, and graduation rates:

• Exemplary High-Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
• Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students.

C.W. Shipley Elementary School was recognized as an Exemplary High-Performing School, and also earned National Blue Ribbon status in 2014. The National Blue Ribbon School recognition affirms and validates the hard work of C.W. Shipley students, educators, families, and communities in striving for and attaining exemplary achievement.
