SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Six students from Jefferson County will advance to the Region VIII Social Studies Fair in West Virginia after securing first-place wins at the county level on February 24. Middle and high school students wowed district judges with their thorough research and impressive displays on self-selected projects across multiple social studies categories. 

The following students will now represent Jefferson County at the regional event on March 16: 

  • 1st Place, Anthropology: "Evolution of Man with Focus on Meat Consumption and its Effects" by Isabella Herrera (JHS)

  • 1st Place, Economics: "Hyperinflation and the Hungarian Pengo" by Louisa Pate (JHS)

  • 1st Place, Political Science: "Are You Willing to Listen?" by Jillian Dillow (JHS)

  • 1st Place, Psychology: "Effect of Social Media on Teenagers and their Mental Health" by Kailey Webb and Eliza Quinn (JHS)

  • 1st Place, Sociology: "Own It All" by Keagan Bauer (HFMS) 

  • 1stPlace, U.S. History: "Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill" by Fiona Perrie (Morgan Academy)

  • 1st Place, World History: "The Three Foundation Sires of Modern Thoroughbred" by Coriander Houser (Morgan Academy)

  • 2nd Place, World History: "Chilean Dictatorship" by Amanda Baeza and Lily Nicodemus (SMS)
  • 2nd Place, World History: "Catherine de Medici" by Allie Hickman and Anne-Lisa Bauer (JHS)
  • 3rd Place, Sociology: "Deviants, Cults, and Criminals" by Leah Kester and Fantasya Roberts (JHS)
  • 3rd Place, U.S. History: "Nessie Explained" Emery Eastman and Amelia White (HFMS)
